DRIVER SAFETY TIPS: THE S.I.P.D.E.METHOD OF DECISION MAKING
PREDICT, DECIDE, EXECUTE
|Driving within the Highway Transportation System requires constant mental alertness and scanning skills. Your visual scanning skills and your ability to make split second decisions can affect your driving safety.
SCAN: What are you looking for?
Scanning skills and defensive driving skills are learned. They do not come naturally. Just as learning any skill takes training and practice, driving is no different. An inexperienced driver will not scan the roadway as an experienced driver does. You must train your eyes to scan the environment for visual clues. You must concentrate and be aware of visual scanning skills.
Scanning allows you to be prepared for the unexpected
1A. SCAN: You are looking ahead 18-20 seconds (1/4 mile), come back to 9-12 seconds, then to 4-8 seconds. What are you looking for?
IDENTIFY: Recognizing hazards
You are identifying potential hazards and conflicts as you scan the road ahead.
PREDICT: Reading the actions of others
As you approach a possible hazard or conflict you are predicting worst case scenario.
DECIDE: determining in time how to react
You are determining the best course of action by altering your path of travel, speed or position, in order to best avoid the possible conflict ahead.
EXECUTE: execute this maneuver in advance
Having determined the best course of action, and have completely avoided the conflict.
This is the essence of defensive driving! Planning ahead, reacting in time.
Without this mental awareness and preparedness, you will rush upon the situation and be forced to act in a defensive way to protect yourself.
A crash happens in 3 seconds, with your defensive driving techniques you have prevented a potential conflict.
The other vehicle or driver may be totally unaware of this process that you have gone through.
The other driver benefits from your safe driving skills.
The SIPDE method of defeniving is an active decision making process, not a passive careless attitude.sive dr
Defensive driving is not lazy, slow to react driving technique.
Driving without SIPDE is only paying attention to your own vehicle and its maneuvers!
Defensive driving is active, planned interaction with other road users. It takes practice and deliberate training to be a good defensive driver.
