Driver Safety tips: The Zipper Merge

Driver Safety tips: The Zipper Merge

THE “ZIPPER” MERGE!

This is a concept I have taught in my driver improvement classes and teen classes for years. The idea of “blocking” a lane to prevent other cars from getting in front of you in a long merge lane is not helpful. With lanes that “bottleneck” or merge into smaller lanes it is not best to get into the open lane as soon as possible as most believe. The two lanes are open to expedite traffic as much as possible until the merge begins. If the cars in line will “zipper” merger, each person taking a turn at the bottleneck, traffic will move more quickly and be safer for everyone. To have one lane back up and prevent other cars from using the merging lane, or blocking the other vehicles from merging at all by blocking lanes, causes confusion, bad feelings, road rage and problems. Please learn to zipper merge, and stop taking it personal when someone wants to merge! Alternate merging traffic and reduce merging time for everyone.
